Woodhouse Games Club

In October 2022 Well Doncaster facilitated a community workshop in Hatfield Woodhouse, in the East of Doncaster where residents were encouraged to share their dreams and aspirations for their community. A number of local male residents attended and shared their idea of starting a board game club in the community.

Well Doncaster supported the group and provided advice on forming a constitution, accessing and applying for a grant and securing a venue. The group collaborated with the local primary school, and through word of mouth raised awareness of the new club. The aim of the group was to create an intergenerational activity that welcomed older and younger residents, bringing age groups together for shared learning, social interaction and fun.

In February 2023 the group held their first session and have since gone from strength to strength, providing a valuable contribution to combating social isolation and bringing fun and friendship to the community.

The group meets every week 3-6pm at the Village Hall and has a large array of board games for people of all ages to enjoy, with no cost to attend. Alongside this, they provide free refreshments and food at low cost, with donations welcome.

They have recently secured a funding grant from a local business for more games. Alongside this, they have successfully received a £500 Active Communities Grant from Get Doncaster Moving to purchase indoor sports equipment for children and older adults to increase physical activity over the winter months.

The group is thriving and is helping residents build new friendships and is now a valuable asset to the community of Hatfield Woodhouse.
